Locals fight to save Tauranga's Tropical Display House from demolition

More than 500 people have signed a petition to save Tauranga's Tropical Display House from demolition by the city council. The council has signalled that it wants to save $100,000 a year and close the display house - unless a community group steps up to take over the operation. It provoked a strong community reaction, including from the Tauranga South Garden Club which organised a petition signed by 543 people.

It is said that "a garden is a friend you can visit any time", and Tauranga South Garden Club members certainly know that to be true. But with smaller-sized residential sections and an abundance of activities competing for our time, the number of keen gardeners appears to be dwindling. And so this 61-year-old garden club aims to cater for everyone, no matter how big or small their plot of dirt.
